How much does funeral insurance cost? Premium types and what suits your age

How much does a funeral cost without insurance?

A complete funeral service in Spain costs several thousand euros — averages hover around €3,500-4,500 and in large cities they can easily go higher. It is an expense that arrives all at once, with no room to compare and at the worst possible moment to negotiate. That is exactly the gap funeral insurance covers.

What funeral insurance covers

It covers the complete funeral service (burial or cremation, funeral home, burial niche), the legal and administrative formalities after the death, and national or international transport. Many policies add extras: travel assistance, online wills, legal guidance or digital footprint removal.

Its real value is not just financial: it spares the family from making decisions and handling paperwork at the worst possible moment.

What factors drive the price

The three main ones: your age when you take out the policy, the number of people insured on it (family policies lower the cost per person) and the level of service chosen. The province also matters, because the average cost of a funeral service varies widely between cities.

Level, natural or single premium

Level premium: you pay the same for life. You start paying slightly more than your age would 'warrant', but the payment never rises over the years. It is the most popular option.

Natural premium: starts very cheap and rises every year with age. It can make sense at young ages or as a temporary solution, but in the long run it ends up expensive.

Single premium: one payment that leaves the insurance paid for forever. Common at advanced ages, when the other options are no longer offered or no longer make sense.

Which one suits your age

As a general rule: the earlier you take out a level premium, the better the price you lock in forever. From a certain age onwards, the single premium is usually the only way in — and even then there are notable differences between insurers.

Before signing anything, compare: the same funeral service can carry very different premiums depending on the insurer. That is exactly what we do for you, free of charge.

Funeral insurance for people over 80

Most insurers close the door on level premiums between the ages of 65 and 75. From there, the usual route is the single premium: one payment — calculated according to age and the service chosen — that leaves the cover paid up for life, with no annual bills. Some insurers offer it with no age limit; others cut it off at 80 or 85, so the choice of company matters more than ever.

As an alternative, some companies keep the natural premium available at advanced ages, but at those ages the annual payment is high and rises every year: it almost always ends up costing more than the single premium. And if the person is already very elderly, it is worth comparing the single premium with the real cost of the funeral service — there are cases where insuring simply does not pay and it is better to set that money aside.

If you want to insure a parent over 80, tell us their age and province: we check which insurers still accept them, compare their single premiums and tell you, with numbers, whether it is worth it or not.
