How much e-scooter insurance costs
Mandatory civil liability for an e-scooter runs between €15 and €40 a year depending on the insurer and the sum insured. If you add theft, own damage or rider accident cover, the price rises to between €50 and €120 a year.
Be careful about comparing on price alone: two €20 policies can carry very different civil liability limits. Since Ley 5/2025 the insurance is mandatory and fines for riding without it reach €1,000, so a cheap policy can prove expensive if the cover falls short.
What a good VMP policy should include
The essential part: civil liability with a limit high enough for personal injury to others — knocking down a pedestrian can generate compensation running to tens of thousands of euros. It is the cover the law requires and the one you should never skimp on.
Recommended depending on your case: theft (e-scooters are among the most stolen vehicles in cities), own damage if the scooter cost more than €400-500, and rider accident cover, because civil liability protects everyone else but not your own injuries.
Check the exclusions too: many policies do not cover scooters modified to exceed 25 km/h, nor commercial delivery use — to work in delivery you need a specific policy.
Common mistakes when buying
The most frequent: assuming your home insurance already covers it. Some home policies included family civil liability that reached the scooter, but with the legal obligation most insurers now require a specific policy tied to the vehicle and its DGT registration.
The second: not declaring the real power or modifications. If the scooter exceeds what was declared, the insurer can reject the claim and you end up paying the compensation out of your own pocket.
