How much it costs to insure a moped
Third-party insurance for a 49cc moped usually costs between €150 and €400 a year. It comes as a surprise because the bike is worth little, but the price does not depend on the vehicle's value — it depends on risk: mopeds are mostly ridden by young people from age 15, and the accident rate is high.
The rider's profile weighs more than the machine: a 40-year-old with years of licence history can pay half what a 15-year-old with a freshly issued AM permit pays, for the same moped.
How to pay less
If the rider is a minor, consider making a parent with an insurance history the policyholder while declaring the young person as the main rider — never hide it, because a claim with an undeclared rider can go uncovered.
Match the cover to the real value: on a €500 second-hand moped there is no point paying for own damage or glass cover. Third-party with roadside assistance is usually the winning combination — the assistance does pay off, because a breakdown 30 km from home costs more than the premium difference.
And compare, because in mopeds the gaps between insurers are among the biggest in the market: for the same profile, some premiums are double others. We do it for free across more than 20 insurers.
What the law requires
Civil liability insurance is mandatory even if the moped is parked on the street and never moves. Riding without insurance means fines of €601 to €3,005 and the vehicle being impounded. If the moped is going to sit in a garage, the free legal alternative is a temporary deregistration (baja temporal) with the DGT.
