Car insurance for young drivers: why it costs so much and how to pay less

Updated: 2026-08-10

Why they charge you so much

Claims statistics for novice drivers are bad, and insurers pass them on to the premium: under 25 with a recent licence is the most expensive combination there is. It is not personal — it is actuarial. The good news: there is room to cut it down.

The trick you have to start years in advance

Being named as an occasional driver on your parents' car builds insurance history in your name. When you take out your own policy, those years count as experience and the premium drops noticeably. If you are still in time — or you have children who will drive soon — it is the most profitable move of all.

The car matters (a lot)

Same driver, very different premiums: a modestly powered second-hand runabout can cost half as much to insure as a sporty hatchback. Before buying a car, get insurance quotes for your two or three candidates — we calculate them for free, and it can change the decision.

Do this, not that

Do: extended third-party instead of comprehensive if the car is modest, annual payment, real mileage and garage details, and comparing across many insurers — some penalise novices far less than others.

Don't: name your father as the main driver when you are the one driving. It is the practice insurers pursue hardest and it can leave you without cover in a serious accident.
